Need vs want

A man attacked his wife for not liking his Facebook status. Excuse me, this seems to be a joke to me.

It might be laughable, but it also raises some concern how the real life relationship can be vastly affected by the online social network. Are we depending too much on online communication tools? Are we losing confidence to speak face to face?

Do you have those Facebook friends that you hardly call if they walk pass you on the street? I know that I have those type of friends. Why is it ok if you suddenly remember a long lost friend and jump in to their page to say hello, but it is not really ok to walk to their house that is not too far from your house. That might depend a lot on what type of people you are, shy or outgoing, active or passive. But the reality is many of us believe that online friendship can replace the real life friendship. I don't Like your status because I am sitting next to you and saying those replies in person.

I am not saying that using Social media is bad. I am saying that maybe we are overusing it. I used to Facebook my housemates when they are just a wall away. Weird, but it happened! And for a while, I almost lost that connection, that true enjoying chit chat time with my friends. What we need is friendship and connection, what we want is more convenient conversation, but what we did might not stick with what we need in the first place. Not surprising!

Just a small note, don't bash me! :)

  1. Attacking over not liking a Facebook status..?! That's just crazy and I don't even want to know how many cases like this exist out there.

I think you're touching a very valid point here, communication is more and more online. It's already possible to make video calls, I wonder when they incorporate video chatting to Facebook.. Then you can't really hide and it's almost like having a face to face conversation with someone. Not necessarily a bad thing if not used with people who are right next to you..

  2. Here's the link if you want to know more why he hit his wife: http://www.theage.com.au/technology/technology-news/husband-allegedly-assaults-wife-for-not-liking-his-facebook-update-20111011-1li0j.html

Actually in America, Facebook has already brought in the Video call, Australia is still waiting. But I dont know how far this Video chat will re-shape the face of online communication though!

  3. Hey, you have an awesome blog page! When did you change it? Love it!
I agree, we are becoming a little sad, but I guess in some ways we need to just accept it, in a way it keeps our good friends close through real conversation, and the other around through use of SM, therefore you get more time to spend with the important people in your life.

  4. haha~~~ i like your blog page! very different!
yeah i think it would be the problem that people paid too much time online, which have the less communication in the real life. Thus, i think it is important that marketer should combine the online and offline experience, which establish an integrated communication with customers.
