When the giant meets the giant!

Here's the news, Facebook and Skype go hand in hand.

I think the Facebook video calling powered by Skype is available to several countries, but here in Australia, we still have to wait.

This feature is not yet available, but I am wondering what it will make Facebook. As one of the most powerful social networking channels now, Facebook still struggles to find rooms for more innovation and more publicity. However, as far as I concern, business is not a "1+1=2" math equation, this strategic alliance is a better off solution or not, we'll have to wait and see.

When Facebook introduced their chat engine embedded in the little corner, I used to find it quite fun. But times passed and I knew I'm just not buying that improvement (back to Messenger is a better idea).

Likewise, as for now, I am good with using Skype and Facebook separately.

Do you think this gonna be a hit? Anyone enjoy the Chat feature in Facebook (or it's just me being a weirdo)?

  1. Do you think that the alliance provides opportunities for business?

  2. With the new video conferencing application, I dont know how far business can leverage this but this alliance will even give way for companies to interact with their followers in a more personalized way to built credibility.

Businesses can also use this video conferencing feature in Facebook when launching a campaign or hosting an event. Maybe, just maybe, live video meeting will allow the company representatives to see their customers' facial expressions, know more about their responses in comparison to just simple comments.

  3. I don't like so much the chat in Facebook. I think that is useful for short messages but not for long conversations, it's too small!!!
I think that the new video conferencing application can work only if you can have the same available functions in Skype (add people to this conversation, share screen, full screen, etc.)

  4. Hi Nia, awesome example! great post!
I use Skype quite a lot as my family live overseas. Being associated with FB won't make me use it any more, but it is required for if FB wants to maintain their current usage status. In fact, I wonder if this is a reaction from FB to stay with G+.
From a business perspective I think this provides great opportunities, less call centres required etc, or perhaps the same amount of call centres but using FB or some SM video call facility, but we are still a few years off from seeing something like this really taking off as a method of communicating with consumers. It is important to get the current basics of SM right first, there seem to be too many organisations that can't quite get it right yet.

  5. Hi Paulette, I also expect Facebook could apply this video chat wisely. Let see how it goes!
Thank you, Rossouwe. Very well thought comment, if this is a respond to G+, I doubt that Fb can succeed. But to Business, G+ is still a big question marks, at least for quite sometimes, Fb will still be the stronger ones. Just my thought!
